Yoga is essentially a lifestyle science designed to give guidelines for a healthy life. We are now using Yogic practices for curative purposes because the diseases prevalent in today's world are a result of bad lifestyle choices. Though these errors may seem insignificant, when they become a pattern, they cause chronic ailments that become more alarming later.

Most lifestyle diseases stem from STRESS, and following yogic principles can help foster holistic health.

In this article, Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, yoga and spiritual leader - Author, columnist, and founder of Akshar Yoga Kendraa, tells us all the easy yoga poses that deserve a place in your daily routine to keep you healthy.

Morning Discipline

Designing a routine that is in line with the cycle of nature helps the body's biological clock to stay healthy. Waking up closer to sunrise, and having a morning exercise routine is extremely important to set the tone for the rest of the day.

Evenings should consciously be slowed down and not include excessive work, or workout. This helps the body to prepare for rest and recovery during the night.

Exercise

The right time to exercise is early morning, preferably between 6:00 am to 10:00 am. Daily practice of 6 sets of Surya-Namaskar in addition to any other form of physical training can give great results. Specifically for stress, the following asanas must be practiced:

  1. Vajrasana(Thunderbolt Pose): Sit with knees bent, pelvis placed on the heels, keep the spine straight, palms on the knees. Benefits: helps in boosting digestion and improving gut health, thereby reducing stress.
  2. Balasana(Child's Pose): Sit in Vajrasana, slowly place the palms in front of the knees, on the floor. Gently walk the palms forward till they fully extend, without lifting the pelvis off the heels, place the forehead in between the palms, keep the eyes closed and relax. Benefits: Helps in releasing stress from the spine, fights backache, reduces stress and relaxes the mind.

Mental Balance

Pranayama and Meditation give wonderful results in maintaining a healthy mind free from stress. Pranayama like "Chandra Nadi Shodhan" cleanses the channels and ensures a stable flow of energy to all systems, especially improving respiratory health. Meditation helps in balancing the mind and improving focus by reducing stress.

The Himalayan technique of "Sthiti Dhyaan" is used to bring mental clarity and improve cognition.

Recreation

One's lifestyle must include recreational practices that help in mental detox and improve hormonal balance. Activities that are enjoyable and don't have performance pressure should be included at least on a weekly basis. Spending time in nature is highly effective.

Healing Walk

Walk at a medium pace with arms stretched above the head, in line with the shoulders. If possible, practice barefoot on grass or earth, in natural surroundings. Benefits: Helps in maintaining overall health and builds immunity. Releases stress, brings stability and builds confidence.

Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is for relax and recovery of the system which stays active throughout the day. Staying awake during late hours of the night can considerably impact gut health, thereby creating stress and health hazards.

The simple practice of Yoga Nidra can help in mindfully relaxing the entire system, support good sleep and enhance productivity.

A holistic yoga practice is simplistic and effective. The impact lies in maintaining consistency and developing healthy habits are key to living a balanced life.
