Giving birth to a child is one of the most special milestones in a woman's life. Motherhood, however, comes with its own set of challenges. Not only does it impact a woman physically, it also has mental and emotional ramifications. As such, the postpartum period is said to be extremely crucial. A woman has to take care of her overall well-being for the sake of her baby, while also healing and returning to a regular routine. It includes engaging in activities that bring joy and comfort, alleviate stress, and promote health and immunity. Yoga is one such activity, and new mother Masaba Gupta is swearing by it. The ace fashion designer, who welcomed a baby girl recently with husband Satyadeep Mishra, took to Instagram to post a video of herself doing a rather challenging yoga pose: the Chakrasana. Take a look.
"The first Chakrasana postpartum feels like being reborn. But, no better way to end a year Or start a new one for that matter," the 35-year-old captioned the video. Gupta, who has always been into yoga and fitness even before her pregnancy, appeared to hesitate a bit before arching her spine and lifting her body off the yoga mat with ease. With her hands and feet carrying the bulk of her weight, the mother-of-one held this pose briefly. Needless to say, she perfected the asana and showed many new mothers following her how it is to be done.
Health Benefits Of Chakrasana For New Mothers
As mentioned by Gupta in her post, going back to any kind of physical activity after giving birth can feel a bit challenging, even to the extent of feeling like one is being born again. Many women experience some setbacks, but the idea is to not push or punish the body. One must take it slow and gradually allow themselves to resume old activities and fall into a fitness routine.
Relieves back pain: The pose can help alleviate back pain and discomfort, which is common in new mothers.
Improves posture: Regular practice of Chakrasana can help improve posture and reduce the risk of back problems.
Reduces stress and anxiety: The pose can help reduce stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins and promoting relaxation.
Tones abdominal muscles: Chakrasana can help tone the abdominal muscles, which can be beneficial for new mothers post pregnancy.
Improves breathing: The pose can help improve lung capacity and breathing, which can be beneficial for new mothers who may experience shortness of breath after delivering a baby.
Precautions For New Moms Practising Chakrasana
Keep the following things in mind:
Wait until cleared by a doctor: New mothers should wait until they are cleared by their doctor to start practising yoga, especially Chakrasana, usually around 6-8 weeks postpartum.
Start slowly and gently: Begin with modified versions of the pose and gradually increase the depth and duration.
Listen to your body: If you experience discomfort, pain, or numbness, stop the pose immediately.
Avoid if you have diastasis recti: If you have diastasis recti (abdominal separation), avoid practising Chakrasana until you are healed.
Modified pose for C-section mothers: If you have had a C-section delivery, modify the pose to avoid putting pressure on the abdominal muscles.
Practise with an instructor: Always work with a qualified yoga instructor while doing postpartum exercises.
