Pain around the neck and shoulder region is quite common these days, stemming from poor posture, lack of exercise, etc. But, there are many things that can be done to get relief from such pains before they get worse. For one, you must consider improving your posture. Sit straight and bring your laptop to eye level. Make sure that your shoulders are relaxed and your spine is straight with something to support it. If you spend a considerable amount of time at work, make sure to take breaks from time-to-time to do some stretching exercises.

Why Are Neck And Shoulder Stretches Important?

Doctors and yoga experts say that neck and shoulder stretches are essential for maintaining flexibility, to reduce tension in the muscles, and prevent pain. The neck and shoulder region bears significant stress from daily activities like computer work, driving, and/or poor posture. Stretches help in the following ways:

  • They relieve muscle strain and stiffness.
  • They improve mobility.
  • They reduce risk of injury and chronic pain.
  • They enhance posture and reduce headaches.
  • They boost overall well-being and productivity.

At the same time, regular stretching can alleviate common issues like: tech neck, shoulder blade tension and pain, and upper back pain.

  1. In the first exercise, you stretch your neck by bending it sideways, so that the ear reaches the shoulder. Repeat on the other side.
  2. In the second exercise, you push the shoulder away from the neck to create a gap. It gives a nice stretch to the muscles there.
  3. After this, you can slowly move your neck up and down to give it a nice stretch.
  4. This can be followed by turning your neck from side to side.
  5. The final exercise involves clasping your hands behind your back. It gives a nice twist to your arms, and reduces pain in the back and shoulders.
