Your hormones are chemical messengers produced by your glands. When someone develops a hormonal disorder or imbalance, it means their gland produces too much or too little hormone. Hormonal disorders are commonly reported in women due to shifts in health as one crosses over 30.
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Health states, "Certain times and events in life naturally affect the hormones of people Assigned Female At Birth (AFAB). Age can affect hormone production and how well hormones work.
"Other life stages, such as puberty, can also affect hormonal levels. Medical conditions that tend to disturb hormones include: Addison's disease, anorexia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), Cushing's syndrome, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and thyroid disorders."
Some of the general side effects of hormonal imbalance are weight fluctuations, irregular periods, mood swings, fatigue and sleep issues, skin problems, hair changes, hot flushes and night sweats, and digestive issues. Check out these four yoga poses to regain hormonal balance in your endocrine system:
Sit in squad position, and slightly turn out your toes. Now, reach your hands forward and bring your forearms onto the ground. Remain in a prayer position for at least 10 breaths. Garland pose opens the hip and groin, improves digestion, posture, and strengthens the core and pelvic floor.
The best way to stretch out your hips, groin, lower back and knees is by performing a bound angle pose. Sit on the floor by bringing your feet together, with both hands holding in the center of the position, ensuring that you feel a stretch on both sides. While doing this exercise, keep your chest broad, look straight and gently breathe in and out for 5 to 10 breaths.
Sit in an easy pose and place your thumb finger on your nose while your pointing finger hovers on the other side. Now, breathe in gently through your nostrils on both sides, one at a time. Repeat this pattern for at least 5 to 10 minutes to reduce stress, anxiety and promote relaxation.
Child pose yoga has multi-faceted benefits for your body as it targets the hips, inner thighs and ankles, while reducing stress and anxiety, factors that can disturb your hormones.
