While there are many health benefits of practising yoga daily, there are some common myths that prevent a person from taking up yoga and practising asanas diligently every day. While yoga does not claim to be a substitute for modern medical treatment, it does offer relief from various lifestyle disorders, and its regular practice is also known to strengthen the body's immunity in a way that it can ward off several diseases. As such, experts suggest finding the time to do some basic asanas daily, so that the body and mind benefit from it.
Ankita Konwar, who is married to Milind Soman, is quite active on social media, where she posts about her many health and fitness escapades. Konwar is often seen doing many different yoga asanas -- especially when she is travelling -- in order to show her fans and followers that yoga can be done anytime and anywhere, and one simply needs the discipline for it.
She recently shared an important video on Instagram, wherein she debunked many different yoga myths. It should be noted that these myths are quite common around the world, and they stop people from truly enjoying learning and taking up yoga. Take a look.

No, you do not have to set aside a lot of time to practise yoga. Some people think that since they cannot afford to spend an hour doing yoga, they are better off not doing it all! But, Konwar said yoga does not require that much time. To start with, even 20 minutes are enough, provided you are doing the asanas dedicatedly.
No, it does not matter what posture you assume, and how you look in it. According to Konwar, what matters is that you are doing yoga. Your body will automatically learn to assume the correct posture with practice. It is important to be mindful of your thoughts and feelings when you are doing yoga.
No, not everyone has a flexible body, and one does not need flexibility to do yoga. This prevailing myth often stops men from practising yoga, because they think their bodies will never bend a certain way. But, men can do yoga and flexibility will be achieved with practice. "With yoga, as your mind becomes more flexible, so will your body."
As mentioned earlier, yoga is not just for women. Anyone can do it. Men, children, and even older adults.
Another common myth is that if you are not in sync with your breath, you are not doing yoga properly. While breathing is an important aspect of yoga, you need to calm down and enjoy it, as the breathwork will happen automatically. Konwar said you can master the posture later.
It may not be possible for you to touch your toes or stand on your head immediately when you start doing yoga, because your body may have to be gradually eased into it. But, that does not mean that you cannot enjoy the asanas and the happiness that it brings to your body and mind. Yoga may help you to connect deeper with yourself and the universe, through every breath.
