Finding a moment of peace and relaxation can often feel challenging. During our busy lives, Afternoon yoga is a perfect way to break the stress and fatigue cycle, refreshing our bodies and minds. Whether we have only a few minutes or a more extended period, these movements can return us to a state of calm and clarity, ready to face whatever comes next. Namaste.

Here are ten relaxing afternoon yoga poses that can help you unwind, rejuvenate, and embrace a sense of calm:

  1. Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana): Pigeon Pose profoundly opens the hips and releases emotional tension. From a tabletop position, bring one knee forward and place it behind your wrist, with your foot angled slightly. Extend the opposite leg back, lowering your torso forward. Deepen your breath as you sink into the stretch, feeling the release in your hips. Switch sides after several breaths.
  2. Legs Up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) is an incredibly restorative pose that helps reduce fatigue and promote circulation. Find a wall and lie on your back, positioning your legs vertically against it. You can use a folded blanket under your lower back for additional support. Close your eyes and breathe deeply for several minutes, allowing the tension in your legs and lower back to melt.
  3. Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Mountain Pose is a grounding pose that encourages stability and calmness at your sides. Ground your feet into the Earth, engage your core, and breathe deeply as you lift your arms overhead, reaching toward the sky. Focus on your breath, feeling centred and connected.
  4. Corpse Pose (Savasana): Often regarded as one of the most essential poses, Savasana allows your body to relax and comfortably integrate your practice's benefits. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, letting go of all thoughts and tension. Stay in this pose for 5-10 minutes, enjoying the stillness.
  5. Cat-Cow Stretch (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana): The Cat-Cow stretch is a fantastic way to awaken the spine. Exhale while rounding your spine, tucking your chin (Cat). Flow between these two positions for several breaths, noticing how your body feels with each movement.
  6. Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana): Cobra Pose stretches the chest and opens the heart, boosting mood and energy levels. Lie face down, keeping your elbows slightly bent. Hold for a few breaths, feeling the lift in your heart space and the gentle stretch in your back.
  7. Reclined Bound Angle Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana): You can place cushions or blocks under your knees for added support in this lower-body lie. Rest your arms beside you, palms facing up, and take deep breaths, feeling your body relax with each exhale.
  8. Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana): The Seat encourages deep relaxation. Sit with your legs extended before you, and take a deep breath, reaching for your feet or shins the stretch, and breathe, holding the position for at least five breaths.
  9. Seated Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana): Twisting poses can bring that foot to the outside of the opposite thigh. Inhale and lengthen your spine, then exhale as you twist gently towards the bent knee. Hold for several breaths, then switch sides.
  10. Child's Pose (Balasana): Child's Pose is a gentle way to release back, shoulders, and chest tension on the ground pose. Hold it for as long as you feel stressed.
