Thalassemia Day: All You Need To Know: It is an inherited blood disorder which occurs due to the defect in the production of alpha and beta chains causing genetic mutation in the haemoglobin protein. Haemoglobin is a protein which is present in red blood cells and enables the cell to carry oxygen. This blood disorder causes anemia. It's symptoms include weakness, irritation, lack of blood in the body, slow growth and abdominal swelling.
Thalassemia is inherited from parents and is of two types alpha and beta-thalassemia. Beta thalassemia is major thalassemia and can make the condition fatal resulting in decreasing the life span.
