The most anxious moment for a new mother is when she holds her baby in her arms for the first time. The newborns look so fragile and tiny that often new mothers are scared to hold them. In this video, Sonali Shivlani Pregnancy, Lactation and Child Nutrition Counsellor shares tips to hold a baby right.
When you hold your newborn for the first time
Supporting your baby’s neck and spine is crucial. So when you are lifting your child, place one hand right under your baby’s neck and the other hand under the lower back. You can then hold your baby upright to feed. Here are baby care tips for every new mum.
When your baby is slightly older
As time passes and you become more efficient, more comfortable and relaxed you might also be able to hold your baby with just one hand. You can place your hand under the lower back to hold the baby. When your other hand is free, you will be able to reach out for a few necessities like a nappy or a glass of water for yourself. If you want to hold the baby upright, balancing the baby with the crook of your elbow can be a very suitable position as well.
While breastfeeding
Whether you are sitting on a bed, a chair or a couch, the first step is to make yourself very comfortable. Once you are comfortable, bring your baby towards you. You can hold the baby in cradle hold position, cross cradle hold position or football hold position. Watch the video and learn more about these breastfeeding positions.
