Designated as a "highly transmissible variant of concern" by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Omicron has reached India. On Thursday, the Karnataka government confirmed that two samples of COVID-positive individuals were found infected with the new Omicron variant. It was only earlier this year, that the second wave of COVID-19 had swept India, leaving lakhs affected. First identified in the country, the Delta variant was the dominant strain that led to a devastating scenario. After fighting the virus for more than four months, India finally reached a point where cases related to the virus were going down. However, the experts had then predicted that the country may face a third wave of the virus infection if there is any new variant of COVID-19.
