Stress and other mental illnesses are increasingly impacting our lives, leaving us with fewer people to talk to or share our problems with. However, fortunately, there are people who specialise in this field and can help us in the best way possible. Psychiatrists or therapists can really help understand our issue and find a pattern to our problems. Since they are trained professionals, they make the best people to seek help from. However, choosing a good psychiatrist is very important. Here are a few tips by Dr Kamna Chibber, clinical psychologist, Fortis healthcare, on choosing the right psychiatrists:
1.Perfect for one person may not be perfect for others: Don’t go by what your friends, relatives or anyone you know have to say about a certain psychiatrist. Since everyone is different the way to deal with everyone’s emotions differ. Hence, go with a psychiatrist you think will understand you better.
2.Connection: The psychiatrist should understand you. According to Dr Kamna, this is the most important criteria you should judge your psychiatrist on. You should feel understood and there should be a good connection between you two.
3. Empathy: Half of the country’s population doesn’t go to a psychiatrist because of the fear of being judged. Go to a psychiatrist who doesn’t judge you for being you and that way you will be able to open up better which will lead to better treatment.
4.Don’t be in a rush: Don’t be afraid in ditching a psychiatrist you are not compatible with. You don’t need to opt for the first psychiatrist you find. Go ahead take a second, third or fourth chance till you are satisfied.
