A rise in the cases of a rare fungal infection called "mucormycosis" or "black fungus" is being reported in Covid-19 patients from various states in India. It a rare but serious fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables. The infection is believed to be triggered by the use of steroids, a life-saving treatment for severe and critically ill Covid-19 patients.
