Viral gastroenteritis is commonly known as stomach flu. This is a highly infectious disease and spreads via contaminated food, water, utensils, improper hygiene and sharing personal belongings (clothes, towels, handkerchief, etc.) of the affected person. There are many species of virus that may cause viral gastroenteritis. Of these rotavirus and noroviruses are the most common ones. Usually school going children and aged persons are more vulnerable to get such infection, but individuals having a weak immune system are also likely to suffer from stomach flu. Commonly diarrhea, intestinal cramps and pain, fever, nausea and vomiting are the symptoms that become apparent in these patients. Drug therapy may not be very effective in the treatment of viral gastroenteritis. However, dietary and lifestyle changes help to control the situation to a greater extent.
