Unwanted Facial Hair

Read in Hindi

While we all have a little hair on the face, there may be times when there is a sudden spurt of growth due to various reasons and this excessive hair growth is called hirsutism. The most common reason is generally a hormonal imbalance because it is the levels of oestrogen that determine hair growth. It is not only taxing to get rid of it every few weeks but an ongoing process which never seems to end.

The culprits of this problem range from your genes to hormonal imbalances. There are various ways to get rid of unwanted hair from your face and body ranging from home remedies which do not have side-effects, to DIY options like shaving to a salon treatment like waxing and also laser treatments. The problem of excessive hair growth in women starts around puberty and marks its territory across the face, neck, chest, back, toes and arms. It mostly traumatises the 18-45 age group.

Certain plants contain compounds that have a function similar to that of estrogen – these are called as phytoestrogens. Researchers are studying the effect of phytoestrogens in patients with hormonal imbalances; results indicate that consuming foods rich in phytoestrogens helps reduce the hair growing on the face. Licorice (jethimadhu),alfalfa (rajko or rijaka), flaxseeds (alsi), fennel (saunf) and Gotu Kola (brahmi in north India) are some of the plants that have been found to contain high concentrations of phytoestrogens. Try to include these in your cooking on a regular basis and check if it makes a difference to your complaint of hirsutism.

While shaving, waxing and bleaching are some of the temporary solutions to get rid of unwanted hair, there are some natural remedies – which may not offer permanent solutions – but help reduce hair growth.
