Substance abuse refers to a patterned use of drugs that have not been prescribed. It may or may not be for recreational or mood altering purposes. Some of the commonly abused drugs are- narcotics, hallucinogens, cannabis, etc.

Rahul Gandhi recently said that 'seven out of 10 youths in Punjab have a drug problem'. In the past, studies by universities, health officials, NGOs and even UN agencies have found that the extent of drug abuse in Punjab was unusually high.
