Oncogene is cancer causing gene. It has potential to transform a normal healthy cell to a cancerous cell under certain conditions. It is a mutated DNA sequence (mutation of proto-oncogene). Proto-oncogene helps in the growth and differentiation of normal cells. But mutation of proto-oncogene disturbs its normal activity and turns into an oncogene. This mutation can be inherited from one generation to the other or may arise after coming in contact with some cancer promoting agents during the life time of an individual.
