Obesity Epidemic

Read in Hindi
Obesity is not a new phenomenon. It has been part of our evolution as well. However, it was not until the 20th century that obesity became so rampant,  so much so that, in 1997, the World Health Organization (WHO) formally recognized obesity as a worldwide epidemic. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2.  Epidemiological studies say that it is the cause of more than 3.4 million deaths and at least 4 per cent of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) all around the world. It is estimated that the health condition of obese persons is most often worse than people with normal weight and their lifespan is also shorter by two years.
