Heparin is an anticoagulant which is used to prevent clotting in conditions like blood clot in deep vein (deep vein thrombosis) and blockage of lung artery by blood clot (pulmonary embolism). It may also be used to reduce risk of blood clots in surgery.

Heparin is produced by basophils and mast cells in the body. It is widely used as an injectable anticoagulant to prevent the formation of clots. The drug heparin works by activating a chemical which blocks thrombin, an enzyme necessary for clot formation. Heparin may cause an immune reaction against platelets. This adverse effect is termed heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Concomitant use of heparin with certain medications, like aspirin, NSAIDs, etc., can increase the risk of bleeding.
