HDL

Read in Hindi

HDL refers to High Density Lipoprotein. It is also called the ‘good cholesterol’. It is thought to be good cholesterol because it tends to reduce the risk of heart diseases unlike LDL or the bad cholesterol which increases the risk. HDL reduces the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) by reusing and recycling of LDL. It is responsible for transporting LDL back to the liver where it is reprocessed.

In a healthy individual, 30% of the cholesterol should be HDLs. An HDL  level of 60 mg/dL in both men and women is considered desirable. Men with lower than 40 mg/dL and women with lower than 50 mg/dL of HDL are considered to be at-risk of heart diseases. If you're at risk, you should improve your HDL by incorporating changes in your lifestyle.

Lifestyle changes play a major role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. You can boost your good cholesterol simply by eating right, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and maintaining healthy weight and exercising regularly. In this section, you can find answers to all your queries related to cholesterol levels, not just HDL. For example: is HDL really good for the heart, can high HDL levels be dangerous or can it indicate heart diseases. You'll also find articles discussing the role of HDL in lowering the risk of Alzheimer's disease and natural foods that can lower cholesterol.
