More than 8 million people in India have corneal blindness. But fear and lack of awareness act as critical barriers to eye donation and corneal transplantation in the country.

Donating an eye is equivalent to being the vision for someone, providing a ray of light in their darkness. Over 15 million people in India are blinded and 75% out of which suffer from corneal blindness could have regained their visions only if the crisis of donors and myths of donation were avoidable.
Doctors call for a big push to increase the number of eye donations in India, considering that 15 lakh Indians are waiting for corneal transplants but less than 15,000 eye balls are donated each year.
Eye specialists say that there needs to be more awareness about eye donation in the country to ensure that the supply of corneas can reduce blindness cases in India.
There have been considerable efforts from the government, NGOs and private institutes to increase public awareness about the need for an increased eye donation. Yet the donation figures remain abysmally low. The reason for hesitance is due to lack of awareness about the process as well as deep-rooted superstitions.
