Esophagus

The esophagus is a long muscular tube like structure which helps to carry food from the mouth to the stomach. It has two sphincters, one at the upper end and the other at the lower end. The upper sphincter helps to pass food properly and prevents it from entering the wind pipe (lies behind the esophagus). The lower sphincter directs the food contents to enter directly into the stomach and prevents the back flow of food and acid from the same. GERD is a type of esophageal disorder in which functioning of the lower sphincter gets impaired, causing the acid to flow back into the esophagus, creating lots of problems.
