The human colon is a part of the large intestine. It is segregated into four parts- ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon. Colon is situated between the cecum and the rectum. The colon is a garland shaped structure which starts from the lower right abdomen, rises up to the liver, then crosses the abdominal cavity and comes to the left side to reach the position of the spleen. Finally, it comes downwards to meet the rectum. Functionally, the colon helps in the absorption of water and minerals from the digested food particles. It also acts as a storage organ for the body wastes.
