The term body image refers to a person’s own view of the aesthetic appeal and sexual attractiveness of his or her own body. Coined by Austrian neurologist and psychoanalyst Paul Schilder, there is still no consensus on the definition of the term. People suffering from body image issues usually believe they aren’t as beautiful or good looking as some cultural ideal which varies from culture to culture. For example, in India we are led to believe that being fair is beautiful and dark-skinned people are somehow not qualified to be attractive. Body image issues can lead to a lot of unhappiness and hamper a person’s professional and professional life.
