When it comes to oral sex taking precaution is of utmost importance. People think oral sex without precaution is fine, but if you are not taking precaution during oral sex you increase your chances of getting an STD to a great extent. This is why even men are advised to use a condom during oral sex when the woman goes down on him. Similarly, even when the woman receives oral sex using dental dams is the best precautionary measure she can take to reduce chances of her man getting an STD.

STDs spread through the exchange of bodily fluids vaginal fluids, semen or blood. Since there is no penetration involved in oral sex the common myth that people harbour is that it is a low-risk sex practice and minimises chances of STD transmission.

However, people do get an STD through oral sex if there are open sores, cuts and bleeding gums in the oral cavity. If the sexual fluid (vaginal discharge or semen) gets mixed with the saliva and blood in the oral cavity and enters the bloodstream this is enough to give one an STD infection through oral sex. One way to reduce the chances is by using protection during oral sex. For men, it is mandatory to use a condom so he doesn t pass the virus to the woman (if he is suffering from any) and for women using a dental dam is the best precautionary method to prevent transmission. Here are few questions about HIV and oral sex answered.

While condoms are easily available, one might have to scout the town to get dental dams. They might not be readily available. You get them only at high-end pharmacies and shopping malls. So if you have a pack of a condom but not a pack of a dental dam, you can make a DIY dental dam with a condom.

Here is how to make a dental dam at home:

Wash your hands and pat dry them. Remove a condom from the pack and unroll it completely. With a pair of scissors cut the tip of the condom. Then cut the condom throughout the length from one side and you get a thin square sheet of latex just like a dental dam. Spread this over the vagina and have a safe oral sex. Keep the outer side upward while placing the sheet. This is a great substitute for a dental dam and easy and cheap too.
