First things first, an orgasm is one of the most intense experiences you have as an human being. So if you have an orgasm and don t realise it it s probably not one. Here's how you can decipher if you have had an orgasm.

It is important to realise that you can have an orgasm without penetrative sex. A woman or a man can orgasm during foreplay and even while masturbating (yes women can masturbate too, here's how). So, to know what it feels like try doing it yourself and then move on to having sex with your partner to know if you both are moving in the right direction.

In men

In men, it is easier to spot as it is often accompanied by ejaculated sperm. The feeling is akin to the sensation of a release. A man feels a sense of euphoria and satisfaction when he experiences an orgasm. Remember that not all orgasms are the same. Some can be more powerful than others.

Another factor that differentiates a man's orgasm from a woman's is that, men usually need a significant recovery period between two orgasms. This is because when a man has one his body releases a series of hormones like oxytocin, serotonin and prolactin that give men a sensation of relaxation, which makes them feel sleepy. In women

Orgasms in women are much more complicated and powerful. The sensation of having an orgasm starts much before the actual release . Although women do not ejaculate like men, they experience the sensation. When a woman is about to orgasm her clitoris stiffens much like a penis and becomes more sensitive. She will feel a strong tingling and pleasurable feeling in her body (most women say that they feel it rise up from their toes and eventually, reach their clitoris and stomach). The sensation gives rise to a series of intense contractions in their vagina and uterus, making their inner thighs extremely sensitive to touch. Finally when they do orgasm there is an instant explosion of various hormones that heightens their pleasure. Interestingly a woman is capable of experiencing multiple orgasms in a single session of sex. You may also like to read about the first time sex guide for women.

In some people, the experience is not intense enough but they do feel a release. There could be a number of reasons for this. If you experience this over a period of time it's best you visit a sexologist to diagnose any underlying causes.
