Can being in a relationship improve your oral hygiene?

Strong romantic relationships, especially marriages have a few amazing psychological and physiological benefits. A lot of studies that have been done on romantic relationships and its effect on mental health have proved people in a relationship are happier than others. As a young adult, the quality of your romantic life can affect your health and well being. The University at Buffalo-led research team found that high-quality relationships are associated with better over all physical and mental health of the people involved. Finding a spouse with the perfect chemistry and compatibility may be difficult but is really worth it as according to a study published by The Carnegie Mellon University, psychologists discovered that people with supportive spouses were more likely to take on potentially rewarding challenges and experience more personal development, pleasure, psychological well-being and better relationship functioning months later. Helps lower depression risk[1]: Reports by the WHO say that over 5 cr Indians suffer from depression and has become a major contributor to global suicides. A good relationship might come to rescue in this case. A study found out that college students and young adults in a committed romantic relationship were less likely to develop depression. Less anger management issues[1]: People involved in a stable relationship, tend to have less anger management issues than those who are suffering a breakup or those who are not in any relationship. People in a relationship are more calm, consistent and patient.

Good oral health: Surprisingly, people in a relationship tend to have better oral health than that of singles. A study has proved that individuals who are in an optimistic, secure and warm relationship may have good oral health compared to those in a bad one. This is because they tend to pay extra attention to their appearance, including dental health. Improved overall appearance also boosts in a lot of confidence.

Reduced risk of developing dementia: Having a reliable, friendly and understanding relationship not only with your spouse but also with your children and other immediate family members may put adults at lowered risk of developing dementia. A study proves that a healthy relationship led to up to a 17 per cent reduction in the immediate risk of developing dementia.

Reduced stress level[2]: Stress brings in a host of other health issues along with it. According to a study published in the journal Sexual Medicine, it is said that having enough sex with the person you are in a relationship with makes you healthier mentally.

If you are in a relationship you’ll see that your life changes and mostly these changes are positive. Your partner starts influencing your life. Dr. Sanghanayak Meshram, psychiatrist and sexologist, Mumbai, says that, ” Being in a healthy romantic relationship does add to your happiness. Your overall lifestyle changes and you tend to drink or smoke less often. Your decision making skills are enhanced and it improves your behaviour and your anger management skills too. And since your interests are shared, you tend to share positive habits more than the negative ones.”
