Why pregnant women should completely avoid firecrackers during Diwali

There is a lot of debate happening around the topic on whether you should burst firecrackers during Diwali or not. But if you are an expectant mum, we suggest you stay away from this debate and celebrate a pollution free green Diwali. As much as we respect your sentiments for the festivities, we also care for your baby who is growing inside you with every passing day. We asked Dr Shobha Gupta, Medical Director and IVF Specialist from Mother s Lap IVF Centre, if a pregnant woman should celebrate Diwali with firecrackers and light diyas the way most people are going to celebrate it. Well, she didn t give a very positive answer for this question. The smoke and pollutants from the firecracker can be dangerous for a pregnant woman. It can give rise to respiratory problems for both the mother and the child, she said. Here are five tips for pregnant woman to enjoy a safe Diwali.

There are enough studies to support this fact that environmental pollutants can harm the baby in the womb and lead to respiratory problems later in life, she adds. Remember, what the mother inhales go into her bloodstream and can affect the fetus after crossing the placenta and reaching the baby. We know that the smokes emitted by the firecrackers isn t good for health. Major organ development of the baby happens from the 6th to 12th week of your pregnancy and so mothers who are in their first trimester should be careful and avoid environmental pollutants, she says.

Apart from respiratory problems, since a pregnant woman s immunity is low there could be chances of suffering from severe cases of skin allergy, rashes, irritation of eyes after Diwali. As all medications are not compatible for pregnant women it could be difficult to treat the same. Some cases might be so severe that the women might need medications which could have potentially harmful side effects for the baby. So stay safe. Here are five Diwali sweets that every pregnant woman should eat.

Here are few tips Dr Shoba offers for pregnant women to enjoy a safe Diwali

  • Choose to dress comfortably and be in cotton garments. They are easy on the skin, breathable and have fewer chances of catching fire as compared to synthetic fabrics. Wear flat footwear as it reduces your chances of falling when you move around.
  • Try and avoid going to places where there are too much noise and pollution. The loud noises could be detrimental to your health and send your baby into trauma.
  • Do not lift or carry any sort of heavy objects.
  • Avoid lighting fireworks that require running to a safer distance prior to an explosion like anar, rocket or chakri. Go easy with the hand-held sparklers.
  • Try to stay indoors maximum amount of time. This way you will have ample of rest and pollution will be kept at bay.
