The nine months of pregnancy can be long and laborious -- besides being exciting -- and at times, even challenging. Growing a human being can bring with it many challenging moments, which is why it is important for a mother-to-be to take care of her overall health, which involves her physical, mental and emotional well-being. The gestation period is usually divided into three trimesters, each of which are unique. There are different things to know and follow in all three trimesters. The first three months are usually crucial; diet and exercise for a mother may be a little tricky during this time. Similarly, in the second trimester of pregnancy, there may be other setbacks, along with things becoming relatively easy. Read on to find out what a mother can expect during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Second Trimester

During the second trimester of pregnancy -- which typically spans from weeks 13 to 27 -- many women experience relief from the fatigue and nausea of the first trimester, says Dr Anusha Rao P, consultant obstetrics and gynaecology, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

Symptoms And Signs

This is what the doctor says a pregnant woman can experience:

  • Growth of the baby: By the end of the second trimester, the baby would have grown significantly, and the mother may start feeling its movements.
  • Decrease in nausea: Morning sickness often lessens or disappears entirely during this time.
  • Increased energy: Many women experience a surge in energy and improved mood.
  • Weight gain: The mother will likely start gaining weight as the baby grows.
  • Visible changes: The baby bump becomes more noticeable, and some women may experience skin changes like the appearance of a 'linea nigra' or darkened patches.
  • Breast changes:Breasts may continue to grow and become more tender.

Diet

In the second trimester, this is what a mother-to-be should focus on, in terms of their diet:

  • Nutrient-rich foods: Focus on a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy products for calcium.
  • Water: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Supplements: Continue taking prenatal vitamins, as recommended by a healthcare provider.

Exercise

Most women can continue exercising during pregnancy. Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and modified strength training are generally safe, the doctor adds. "It is essential to consult with your gynecologist before starting or continuing any exercise routine during pregnancy to ensure safety."

Precautions

The following things must be kept in mind:

  • Avoid high-risk activities that may lead to falls or abdominal trauma.
  • Pay attention to any discomfort or pain during exercise and adjust accordingly.
  • Avoid overheating, especially during exercise, and stay hydrated.
  • Consider doing pelvic floor exercises to help strengthen the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels.

"Overall, the second trimester is often a more comfortable time for many women, as compared to the first trimester, allowing them to focus on staying healthy and preparing for the arrival of their baby," the doctor concludes.
