What are breast shells?
Breast shells are silicone cups that cover the areola and nipples and fit well in the bra. These shells provide comfort and protect the nipples that have become tender from breastfeeding. They also help ease engorgement which is quite common if you have just started breastfeeding and do not have control on unexpressed milk. What are nipple shields?
Breastfeeding can become quite difficult if you have flat or small nipples. Also, the nipples tend to become sore and sensitive making, it painful for the mother when the baby latches on. Nipple shields were introduced to solve this problem. Nipple shields are usually made of silicone and are put over the nipples or areola in case of flat nipples. This helps the baby to latch on in case the nipples are too small or flat. It also aids in protecting sore nipples during breastfeeding. The difference
There is a difference between the two, but nipple shields are often confused with breast shells and both are thought to serve the purpose of protecting the nipple. However, the former is used to aid in breastfeeding while the latter is used to protect the nipples post it. Moreover, not everyone needs nipple shields especially if you have regular sized nipples that the baby can latch on. Breast shells, on the other hand, can be used by all mothers.
