Pregnancy and constipationAre you pregnant? Suffering from constipation? Well, you are not alone. Constipation is a common occurrence during pregnancy, and a number of women fight shy when it comes to talking about these intimate problems. We spoke to our expert Sonali Shivlani - certified pregnancy, lactation and child nutrition counsellor, about why pregnant women suffer from constipation and what they can do about it.

Constipation during pregnancy happens for a couple of reasons, one is a change in hormones which do not allow the natural process of digestion. Another common reason for constipation is because most pregnant women take iron supplements, which tend to lead to constipation. In some cases it can lead to severe constipation and may result in anal fissures which are painful. That is why it should be treated immediately.

If you are pregnant and suffering from constipation, here are some simple home remedies you could try for some relief:

  • Include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and unrefined grains into your diet. This will add fibre to the diet, and help relieve constipation.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Eat a healthy and balance diet.
  • You could ask your doctor for a change in your iron supplement as some brands may suit you better than others.
  • Having a few soaked raisins every morning. They give a boost to the fibre intake, and act as a good laxative.
  • Avoid using laxatives without your doctor's supervision however tempting it may be.
