5 things every pregnant woman should NOT DO when exercising

Here's what you should avoid while exercising during pregnancy.

Exercising is good for normal well being. But if you are pregnant it is recommended to exercise at least half an hour every day as it keeps you active during pregnancy. However, there are many do's and don'ts every pregnant woman must follow to ensure when exercising during pregnancy to reap maximum benefits. Dr Vijaya Manohar, Consultant Gynecology & Obstetrics, Apollo Cradle shares few insights on what you should NOT do when exercising. Here are few exercise dos and don ts during pregnancy.

#1. While stretching your muscles, a hormone called relaxin is produced. This hormone enhances the flexibility of your muscles. Hence, be certain that you do not stretch your muscles more than required as it would lead to a muscle tear and land you in trouble.

#2. Exercises which involve waist twisting, inverting your body i.e. staying upside down, bouncing and stretching together or crunches should be avoided. This is because these exercises might cause variations in your blood pressure. The drastic changes in the blood pressure during pregnancy might not be safe for you and your baby. So please keep this point in mind when exercising. Here's a list of exercises to avoid during pregnancy.

#3. While exercising, make sure you do not stand for a long time. This can lead to an uneven blood flow to the uterus and excess flow to the legs. As the legs receive a large amount of blood it can cause dizziness.

#4. Holding your breath is not advisable for you and the baby when exercising, especially when doing yoga. There are high chances that you might pass out while doing so. Opt for exercises that would not make you hold your breath. Here are few dos and don ts for yoga during pregnancy.

#5. Make sure that you do not lie on your back while exercising as the supine position does not allow a proper blood flow in the body leading to nausea and breathing issues. At such times it is advisable to lie down on the left side of your body.
