I am 27-years-old and in my seventh month of pregnancy. I have swollen feet (obviously) and was thinking of booking an appointment for pedicure and foot massage. However, a lot of people asked me to not do it since I'm in my third trimester. Are there any risks? Please advice.
Pedicures are something that make you feel beautiful and relaxed. But should you get one during pregnancy is a debated topic. While some say that it's completely safe, there are some who beg to differ. There are tons of things that you need to take care of if pedicures and foot massages are on your mind during pregnancy. Rosy Awomi of Bodhi Thai Spa says, "The first thing we ask our female customers is if they are pregnant and whether the doctor approved of them getting a massage. There are few pressure points on your foot that are connected to your central nervous system. Any pressure applied at these points can stimulate fetal activity and contractions."
It is safe to carry your instruments if you're not sure about the instruments used at your spa to avoid a risk of infections.
Consult your doctor once before heading to the spa.
Make sure the spa has proper ventilation, so the fumes from nail polish and other products don't make you nauseous.
Do not go for a foot massage if you are seven months or more into your pregnancy.
Do not use products that have a lot of chemical content in them.
Never forget to inform the spa that you are pregnant and how far along you are in pregnancy because there are certain treatments like whirlpool, sauna, etc. that you must refrain from.
Do not indulge in a reflexology treatment and a back massage.
However, Dr. Uma Vaidyanathan, a Mumbai-based gynecologist, begs to differ. She says,"Getting pedicures is a good thing, and even I recommend it to my patients who are pregnant. During pregnancy, you reach a stage where you can't even see your feet because of your pregnant belly. Hence, getting pedicures is a must to keep your feet clean. It is also very relaxing and a feel-good factor for the mother-to-be."
