After I had given birth, I remember two things of the first few hours of post-partum. The first thing was that I was crying as I held my baby for the first time and breastfed her. It was an immensely overwhelming feeling to finally hold my baby and to look at the face I had only imagined for so long. The other thing I remember is this feeling of intense pain in my wrists. The pain was so bad I could not even hold my newborn without wincing. In the flurry of people fussing over the baby and me trying to keep her to myself, I did not remember to mention it to the doctor. But the pain was intense, and lasted for a few hours. Till the time I got discharged from the hospital, it did not occur to me to mention it to the doctor, and later when I told my mom about the pain, she brushed it off, saying that I was probably very weak and that’s why experienced that pain. Much later, I discovered that a lot of women face many aches and pains post pregnancy that are not usually discussed. Also Read - Suffering from constant headaches? Not only does a woman’s body get out of shape during pregnancy, making a baby leeches the mother of many nutrients. “I was so deficient of vitamin D after childbirth that standing up for more than five minutes was painful. I used to have severe body pain, especially around the joints. It all got better once I started vitamin D supplements and injections,” says a mother. Not just that, vaginal pain after having a vaginal delivery is also common. Passing a baby through the birth canal takes a toll on the vagina. A lot of mothers experience piercing or throbbing pain in the vagina for a few days or weeks of post-partum. Another problem that some mothers face is swollen and painful feet. It is usually caused when you sit or feed the baby while sitting with your legs hanging for prolonged time. To avoid that, always lift your legs up or sit on a comfortable chair with proper leg support. Also Read - Keto headaches are real: Tips for dieters to ease the discomfort

Pain in upper body

A mother to two children says that she experienced chronic headache for two months after delivering her second child. On consultation, the doctor said that some women experience headache due to the spinal anaesthesia that is administered during delivery. Other than that, pain in the shoulder and upper arms is also common, because of carrying the baby and constant feeding. Again, a good posture and comfortable seating during breastfeeding can help. Heavy breasts and suckling of the baby can also lead to sore nipples. Apply a good nipple cream and use hot water bags if breasts get too painful.
