Have folic acid during conception

Folic acid is an important nutrient to be consumed during pregnancy. A deficiency of the same can lead to a condition called as spina bifida a serious defect of the spinal cord in the fetus leading to weakness in the lower limbs and loss of control of bowel and bladder movements in the baby after birth.

Folic acid supplements are given to an expectant mum to counter the deficiency. But taking folic acid pills while planning the pregnancy is a great way to be sure that you don't fall short of the required levels of this important nutrient and ensure fetal wellbeing.

If you do not wish to take pills while you are on the conception stage add more foods that are rich in folic acid to up the required levels. Eat more dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, beans, oranges and strawberries for the same reason. Also read 'Why folic acid is important during your pregnancy?'
