Pregnancy is a time when you should give junk food a miss and include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Fresh and brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and minerals that contribute to both you and your baby’s well-being. To ensure that you get the most out of nature’s bounty, pick fruits and vegetables of all colours and variants. Also remember darker the colour, the better the fruit or veggie is for you. Apart from being nutrient-dense, dark coloured veggies and fruits are also rich in antioxidants, macro and micronutrients. Also read about the eight must-have veggies during pregnancy. Don’t restrict yourself to basic fruit and veggie choices, explore the variety of colours. For example, if you are buying spinach, pick the bunch that is the darkest in colour. For some veggies like capsicum, you’ll be spoilt for choice as all the varieties – the dark green, yellow or red ones – are all packed with nutrients. When it comes to fruits, berries, peaches, plums and the different varieties of grapes are all perfect additions to your diet. Read about the four citrus fruits that you cannot miss during pregnancy.

Tip: Remember that apart from picking healthy foods, you have to ensure that what you eat is clean and washed well. To be sure that your vegetables and fruits are free of pesticides and chemicals, wash them thoroughly before you cook or eat them. Alternatively, you can also dip them in water for half an hour to get rid of dirt and chemicals from the surface. Read more about how you can keep your vegetables fresh for longer.
