Pregnancy Tip #20 – Have sprouts to increase your protein intake

Sprouts can increase your protein intake, help you feel satiated and also help you with other benefits. More reasons to have them when you are pregnant.

Spouts are an excellent source of proteins and are also low in calories. They stand to be a good snacking option during pregnancy, which helps one to stay satiated for longer and they also ensure sufficient intake of amino acids, essential for cell and muscle development, both in the mother and the baby. During your second trimester when those hunger pangs get the better of you, try having a hand full of sprouts rather than giving in to your unhealthy cravings. This is because unhealthy eating habits at any time during your pregnancy can do you more harm than good, as it will be less nutritious and more calorie dense. Read why you shouldn’t have long gaps between your meals.

Moreover, if you are a vegetarian and depend on plant sources for your protein requirement, you should make a conscious effort to include this food item in your diet plan. During pregnancy, your protein intake has to increase by 10 gm, so try to get it from the right sources. You should know that adequate protein intake during pregnancy helps you to fight fatigue, which sets in right after conception and stays with you till the end.

To include sprouts in your diet,

  • Make a healthy bowl of salad with boiled sprouts with finely chopped onions, tomatoes and other vegetables of your preference. To this, add a dash of lemon and a pinch of salt. Mix well and garnish it with chopped coriander. This filling snack can satiate you and will also help you pull up your energy levels in the evenings, especially if you had a tiring day at work.
  • Use boiled sprouts as sandwich fillings with whole wheat bread and make it a wholesome healthy breakfast to start your day.

Tip: Avoid having raw sprouts as far as possible.
