Pregnancy tip #17: Treat constipation to avoid hemorrhoids

The most common pregnancy complaint - constipation can give rise to another more troublesome issue -hemorrhoids. Better tackle it at the start to have a smooth sailing pregnancy.

Constipation and hemorrhoids are two pregnancy problems that most women suffer from, at some point of time during a pregnancy. While constipation is the result of increased progesterone levels in the body and to some extent due to the additional iron intake that slows the bowel movements, hemorrhoids is caused due to the pressure exerted on the pelvis area by your bulging belly. At most times, hemorrhoids are common during the third trimester of the pregnancy when the labour-ready bump presses on the veins in the pelvic area restricting smooth flow of blood, returning from the lower part of the body. This makes the veins in the area swell and become sore leading to hemorrhoids. However, keep in mind that hemorrhoids during pregnancy doesn’t pose a serious risk, but it can be very painful and annoying at times. Extra strain due to constipation, during a bowel movement will only aggravate the problem. This will make the hemorrhoids become itchy, painful and also bleed, making the bowel movement more troublesome. Read common pregnancy mistakes women make and how to deal with them.

So if you have been suffering from constipation problems during the start of your pregnancy, treat and relieve your symptoms of the same to avoid painful hemorrhoids during the later stages of your pregnancy.

To counter your bouts of constipation:

  • Increase fibre intake in your diet. Include foods like pulses, beans, legumes, fresh vegetables and fruits to up your fibre intake.
  • Drink at least two to three liters of water, which will aid in the process of digestion and help in smooth bowel movements.
  • Do some exercises. This will give jolt your system and help you not only deal with constipation, but also give you a host of other benefits to enjoy.

In case you still suffer from hemorrhoids, try the following:

  • Apply ice packs or anesthetic gels to reduce pain and swelling in your pelvic area.
  • Sleep on your sides to relieve pressure on the sore veins.
  • Use the restroom whenever you need and do not delay nature’s call.
  • Consult your doctor if the pain and discomfort bother your general well-being.
