A common myth that is harboured among many expectant mothers is that they need to ‘eat for two’ while they are pregnant. But sadly this isn’t true. While your nutrition intake has to increase during pregnancy to fuel of your overworked body and take care of your baby’s growing needs, it doesn’t mean you need to start eating double the amount of food you ate pre-pregnancy. Remember that all you need to do is increase your caloric intake by 300 calories to meet the additional requirement of your body. That being said, you might experience hunger pangs during your second trimester that can make you crave for unhealthy foods. But it is essential that you be very watchful about your diet. Eating processed or junk food at this time will lead to your foetus getting less nutrients and more fat accumulation in the body. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can lead to complications like gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, or necessitate a C-section during labour.
