The right time to plan a second baby
No matter what the age gap between your two kids, it has its own share of pros and cons. Research has shown that a longer gap between two pregnancies, five years or more, reduces the risk of a caesarean. Plus, if your child is five or six years old when you plan the second pregnancy, he/she can easily understand the concept of a new baby and other family members can look after him/her without much difficulty. An older child is also more likely to welcome the new baby.
On the other hand, if you first child is still very young, he/she may feel left out, and the feeling of insecurity may be higher. You may feel restless leaving a younger child at home while you are at the hospital.
But if you're in your late reproductive stage, a very large age gap between two pregnancies is not advisable. This is because it may lead to insufficient supply of nutrients to the baby and thus, interfere with proper growth of the fetus in some cases.
So, if you are worried about your age and fertility, it is better that you plan your second pregnancy sooner.
Having said so, you should keep adequate gap between your pregnancies. Experts advise not to plan your second pregnancy at least for 18 months after the first baby. It is best to keep a gap of at least three years between the two kids.
Planning a second baby? Take note of these few things
Before you plan to have a second baby, first make sure that you are healthy and that you and your partner can take on the responsibility of having another baby. Here are a few more things to keep in mind when you plan to get pregnant again:
Get a complete health check-up done to ensure that your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal.
It takes two to make a baby. So, your partner's health is equally important. Make sure he eats the right nutrition to boost sperm health, avoid smoking, drinking and other vices that can affect the sperm quality and quantity.
If you are overweight, try to lose those extra kilos. Being overweight or obese may make it difficult for you to get pregnant. Follow a nutritious diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies and stick to a regular exercise routine.
