Suffering from a miscarriage can be a heartbreaking experience for a couple, and it can have potential long-term physical consequences for the woman. In fact, many couples undergo miscarriages repeatedly, with two or more pregnancy losses in a row. Beyond the physical strain and trauma, these repeated health setbacks can cause deep emotional stress, too, doctors warn. Couples going through it may often feel lost, confused, and desperate. But, help is available, and it is important to seek it. Read on to know more.
Why Do Miscarriages Happen Repeatedly?
Dr Apurva Satish Amarnath, fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru explains that there could be many reasons for why miscarriages happen repeatedly. For instance, chromosomal abnormality is a leading cause. "Sometimes, health conditions like problems with blood sugar or thyroid levels can affect the body's ability to support a pregnancy. The shape or strength of the womb may also play a role. That is why couples who have had two or more miscarriages should not wait for another loss before speaking with a specialist," the doctor says, adding that some specific tests can help find the right reasons and initiate the correct course of treatment.
"Even when no clear cause is found, the evaluation process can still be helpful, giving couples a clearer picture of what to expect moving forward."
According to the doctor, when a miscarriage happens more than once -- especially twice in a row -- it indicates something is wrong. This is when patients and doctors begin to discuss the role of IVF, or in-vitro fertilization, to achieve pregnancy.
"IVF is commonly used to help couples who have trouble getting pregnant. But, it can also help those with repeated miscarriages. With IVF, doctors can check the embryos before placing them in the womb and choose only the ones that appear healthy. This lowers the risk of another miscarriage, especially when previous losses may have been caused by problems in the embryo," the expert explains.

How Long Should Couples Wait Before Undergoing IVF Treatment?
Dr Apurva says while it is natural for a couple to want to try for a baby right away after recovering from a miscarriage, it is important to wait for about six months before the next attempt, especially if one is opting for IVF. Doing so may improve the chances of conception. "It gives the body time to recover; couples can also find the space to heal emotionally. Each couple's situation is different. Some may be advised to wait longer, while others may move forward sooner based on their age or health. It would be ideal to talk to a doctor."
