I am six months pregnant and love listening to music. Is it safe for me to use headphones for longer duration? Can I place the headphones on my womb too, as I have heard that babies (in womb) love music too? Please advise.

Music relaxes frayed nerves and brings positivity, says Dr Shubhangi Patkar, professor and Head of Psychiatry Department, KEM Hospital. Several studies have proven that music is one of the best stress busters. In fact, researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Germany have discovered that music sounds better during pregnancy.

Listening to music on players has become a little outdated. Women often prefer to hear music stored or downloaded on their phones through headphones. Dr Rahul Manchanda, Consultant and Head Gynaecologist and Endoscopic Surgeon, PSRI Hospital suggests that using headphones does not affect the fetus in any way. You can use them for few hours during the day at regular intervals. Excessive usage may lead to the same problems as in the case of any regular person. Here s a pregnancy playlist that will soothe you and your little one.

If you are playing soft music, the baby may not be able to hear it when headphones are in your ears. Bringing them near the womb will help the music reach your baby, which is why mothers prefer placing the headphones on their belly. There is no scientific evidence that this practice can harm the baby. Hence, you can play soft music and keep your headphones on your baby if your baby likes it, suggests Dr Manchanda. It is necessary that you do not overdo it. half an hour at one go is more than enough. Choose soft music instead of harsh or loud numbers as the baby might not like the vibrations caused by it.
