I am in the third trimester of my pregnancy and experience severe abdominal pains when I stand for too long or walk around. I was told that a maternity girddle or belt can help counter these pains during the last trimester. Will wearing the belt affect my growing baby in any way? Or is it safe to wear one during pregnancy?

While your baby grows inside and the uterus bulges out, it puts a pressure on the ligaments and muscles supporting it giving rise to lower abdominal pains and in some cases leg cramps too. But that is not all; the growing belly also puts a pressure on the cervix. Too much pressure on the cervix can lead to a premature rupture and other pregnancy complications. People with the history of a weak cervix should be more cautious.

In such a case wearing a maternity griddle or a maternity band will help you support your growing belly and put less pressure on your lower abdomen and cervix. This will also help to prevent any untoward incidents like cervix tear too. However it is always wise to first talk to your doctor before picking up any such maternity accessory.
