I am eight weeks pregnant and want to go for a vacation with my husband before our child is born. I wanted to know if it is safe to travel during pregnancy and what are the precautions that I need to follow? Also Read - Winter care tips for pregnant women: What’s good and What’s bad for you

It is generally said that the second trimester of your pregnancy, i.e., between the fourth and the sixth month of your pregnancy, is safe for travelling. Avoid travelling long distances either by road or by air during the first trimester of your pregnancy. Also it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before you decide to travel. Sometimes certain conditions like a low-lying placenta or pre-eclampsia can make such a journey hazardous. Also Read - Early birth linked to 'greater risk of hospital visits during childhood'

Air travel after the first trimester is usually considered safe till the 34th week of pregnancy. But it would be wise if you avoid travelling after you complete your second trimester. Before you plan a vacation make sure that you have located a nearby hospital, close to where you plan to stay. Take all your medications and your medical records with you. Stick to low risk activities and avoid any strenuous activity that can harm your baby. Also avoid swimming as you can catch an infection from the water in the pool.

It is important that you keep yourself hydrated enough during your travels and sip on fresh juices and drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause the uterus to contract and lead to fetal distress. Also remember to wear your seatbelt below your belly.
