I am in my 9th week of pregnancy and constantly feel dizzy and weak. I am taking all my vitamin and iron supplements along with a healthy meal, then why do I feel so weak? Is it normal to feel dizzy during pregnancy?
Query answered by Dr Uma Vaidyanathan, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Max Hospital, New Delhi
Dizziness and feeling lightheaded during the early stages of pregnancy is an extremely common complaint among expecting mothers. This mainly happens due to blood pressure fluctuations because the mother doesn t eat a well balanced and nutritious diet for adapting to the changes that take place in her body during pregnancy. One s heart rate increases and also, the heart pumps more blood. In most cases, the patient stops complaining of lightheadedness and fainting spells after making corrections to her diet and no drugs are required to treat this complaint. These are the 10 reasons why you should take fainting seriously.
However, while most women complain of feeling lightheaded during the first three months of their pregnancy, if it doesn t subside even after making changes to their diet and continues through the later stages of pregnancy it could mean that you are suffering from anaemia. If you re anaemic, there are fewer red blood cells in your body to carry oxygen to different organs which will leave you feeling lightheaded. Add iron rich foods to your diet to tackle anaemia other than consulting your doctor.
Other underlying health conditions that your doctor might suspect if you re suffering from dizziness even in the later stages of pregnancy (post the first trimester) are cervical spondylitis (These are the 5 symptoms of cervical spondylitis), visual defects, and sinusitis.
