I am planning to get breast implants. We are also planning to start a family by next year. I was wondering if I would be able to breastfeed my child without any complications after getting the implants? Please advice.

Paresh Doshi, senior counselor for breast augmentation at Allure medspa, Mumbai answers:

It is very important to first understand the various options available for breast augmentation and study their pros and cons before you opt for a particular type of treatment. Not all breast implants interfere with breastfeeding.

There are three types of implants practiced commonly. The axillary technique involves implants with the help of an incision below in the armpit. Since the muscles near the armpit are not associated in any way with the breast and milk flow through glands, this type of breast augmentation poses no problem in breastfeeding.

The second type is the infra-mammary technique, wherein an incision is made in the crease below the breast. Just like axillary technique, this method of implants is also safe and does not cause any discomfort during breastfeeding. The milk flow also remains normal. These two techniques are commonly practiced in India for breast implants not only because they do not cause any problems during breastfeeding but also because of the final outcome of implants. Breasts retain the natural look and no scars or marks are seen. Are you aware of these common breastfeeding problems?

If you plan to breastfeed after augmentation, then the periareolar method of implants should not be opted for. In this method, an incision is made on the skin around the nipple to hide the scar. However, this method damages the tissue that is critical to breastfeeding. Once this tissue is damaged, the exits for milk flow are obstructed. So you will be able to produce milk but breastfeeding may not be possible. The accumulation of milk can be painful and cause complications.
