I am pregnant and in my first trimester now. My in-laws had been forcing me to have milk daily to keep up with my daily calcium requirements. But i am lactose intolerant and cannot take milk and other dairy products. I want to know if not having milk will affect my baby in any way. How can I make sure that I meet my calcium needs if I miss out on milk?
The calcium requirement during pregnancy rises because a woman would need adequate calcium for stronger bones and good skeletal health in the baby. So be regular with your calcium supplements.
Apart from supplements, make sure you get your share of natural calcium. If you can't have milk or dairy products because you are lactose intolerant, try other rich sources of calcium you can indulge in.
Also remember that vitamin D is vital in ensuring calcium absorption. Eggs and fish are excellent source of the same. Make it a point to be in the sun for a while daily to get vitamin D naturally. If you are a vegetarian, talk to your doctor about vitamin D supplements.
