In order to increase the chances of becoming pregnant, follow these seven essential tips that can raise the fertility outcome and your chances of conception, as explained by Dr Sandeep Talwar, a fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi.

Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle

This is the most basic thing you can do to start a family. Prepare your body by engaging in regular exercise. Consuming a healthy diet is essential for fertility. Eat foods rich in nutrients, like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and healthy fats -- this goes for both the partners, the doctor suggested. She added that trans fats, processed foods, and too much sugar must be avoided to improve reproductive health and hormonal balance.

Consider engaging in yoga, swimming, or brisk walking that are known to lower stress, balance hormones, and help people maintain a healthy weight. Keep in mind that too much exercise, particularly for women, can interfere with the process of ovulation.

According to Dr Talwar, couples attempting to conceive must keep a track of the menstrual cycle and the ovulation phase. The 'fertile' window is in the middle of the menstrual cycle (days 12-16 for a 28-day cycle); it is the ideal period to have intercourse. "Ovulation can be tracked in a number of ways, including by monitoring basal body temperature (BBT), which indicates ovulation by a minor increase in temperature, or by utilising ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), which identify an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH). The best time to conceive can also be determined by changes in cervical mucus, which becomes elastic and clear during periods of high fertility," the doctor explained.

Keep Your Weight In Check

It is important for both men and women to be mindful of their weight. The doctor pointed out that people who are underweight or overweight may face trouble conceiving. "It is possible for women who are underweight to experience irregular menstruation; those who are overweight can also experience irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, and ovulation problems. Obesity in men is associated with decreased testosterone levels and sperm quality. For better fertility results, aim for a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. Speak with a doctor or a dietitian for individualised advice."

Manage Stress, Get Enough Sleep

Stress is the biggest roadblock to pregnancy. In men, prolonged stress can affect sperm production, and in women, it can impact ovulation by interfering with reproductive hormones. Regulate hormones by practising stress-relieving techniques like yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and spending time outdoors. It is also important to get seven to nine hours of good sleep every night. Inconsistent sleep patterns can result in lower-quality sperm and irregular periods, the expert warned.

Stay Away From Caffeine, Alcohol, Tobacco

Making poor lifestyle choices like smoking, binge drinking, and consuming large amounts of caffeine can affect fertility. The doctor warned that smoking impairs the quality of sperm and eggs, making conception more challenging. Additionally, alcohol consumption can disrupt ovulation and sperm production. Consumption of more than 200-300 mg of caffeine daily can also be harmful for reproductive health.

Prenatal Supplements And Vitamins

Dr Talwar said folic acid (400-800 mcg daily) should be started by women trying to conceive, to avoid neural tube abnormalities in the unborn child. "Minerals like zinc and selenium, which increase male fertility, omega-3 fatty acids, which enhance the quality of eggs and sperm, and vitamin D, which promotes hormone production are additional helpful supplements. Consult a doctor before beginning any supplement regimen."
