Hailey Bieber on her dangerous postpartum experience: Being in the public eye can be a stressful feeling, and the constant scrutiny can make it worse. Imagine being pregnant while being in the limelight, and watching your life being ripped apart on public platforms, including social media. But Hailey Bieber has maintained a brave front till now, even though people dissected her marriage with singer Justin Bieber, and floated bizarre stories about their separation while she was pregnant with their first child last year. Now, in an interview, Hailey has opened up about her harrowing experiences while being pregnant, post the delivery of her child, and now as a new mother. Even as she continues to face online trolling and criticism, Hailey is absolutely grateful for her health, especially since she thought she was almost going to die in the labour room after giving birth to her son Jack Blues in August 2024.

While giving birth, Hailey, 28, suffered from a life-threatening postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). It is a dangerous condition, wherein there is severe bleeding from the mother's body after the birth of the baby. It is, in fact, the leading cause of maternal mortality across the globe. "Giving birth was the hardest thing I've ever done," the founder of skincare brand 'Rhode' told Vogue recently during an exclusive interview.

Prior to welcoming her baby, the new mother was engaged in breathing exercises, yoga, pelvic-floor therapy, acupuncture therapy, and many other kinds of workouts, including walking and weight training. She left stronger, both physically and mentally. But a harrowing birthing experience was not something she had anticipated. Hailey was induced at 39 weeks, when her amniotic fluid began to leak. But labour was a long and enduring process.

The model was given a medication called 'Pitocin' that is known to trigger contractions. She also received a 'Foley balloon' -- a catheter- like device inserted inside the uterus. It is inflated with saline and given to patients to help dilate their cervix. "...that was not fun," the first-time mother recalled. "They broke my water. I went into labour..." She was apparently in labour for 18 hours without any epidural.

Shortly after Jack Blues Bieber was born, however, Hailey got a shocker: she had been bleeding a lot. PPH is a medical emergency which, if not treated in a timely manner, can cause death, as the body can go into hypovolemic shock owing to immense and steady loss of blood, and a drop in blood pressure. It can also cause organ damage. "I trust my doctor with my life. And so, I had peace that I knew she would never let anything happen to me. But, I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind," she was quoted as telling the publication.

Hailey recalled her baby boy being 'whisked away'. "You start to get a little freaked out." Her doctors then inserted a 'Jada device' -- a vacuum apparatus -- into her body to control the bleeding, and it hurt a lot. She endured the treatment for many hours, recalling: "I wanted to hold my baby. I wanted to be with him."

The socialite and businesswoman called postpartum 'the most sensitive time' of her life. And while she was undergoing all that, the internet would say nasty things every day, about which she now said: "I cannot even begin to explain it."
