Regenerative medicine, according to the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies, is defined as the process of replacing or 'regenerating' human cells, tissues or organs to 'restore or establish normal function'. It aims to regenerate damaged tissues and organs by replacing them or by 'stimulating the body's own repair mechanisms to heal tissues or organs'. Regenerative medicine, it states, may also enable scientists to grow tissues and organs in the laboratory and 'safely implant' them when the body is unable to heal itself. Revolutionising IVF
In recent years, the field of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has witnessed many remarkable advancements, particularly with respect to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). These advancements have shown to improve success rates and also offer hope to couples facing fertility issues. According to Dr Pradeep Mahajan, a regenerative medicine researcher and founder of StemRx Hospital and Research Centre, since each individual's genetic makeup and health profile are 'unique', experts can 'leverage' advanced technologies and 'tailor IVF procedures' to suit specific needs and enhance outcomes. "Soon, there will be cells rather than pills," he says.
Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
Explaining the concept of PGT Dr Mahajan says that the technique allows embryologists to screen embryos for genetic disorders before implantation, thereby reducing the risk of inherited diseases and increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy. PGT is important in improving the overall quality of embryos transferred during IVF.
The use of time-lapse imaging systems in IVF laboratories is also crucial because these systems 'continuously monitor embryo development', providing 'valuable insights into embryo quality and viability without disturbing the delicate incubation environment'. The expert states that it entails a real-time monitoring that allows for better decision-making regarding embryo selection, leading to higher success rates and reduced risk of miscarriages.
Cellular Technology
Cellular technology holds 'promise for enhancing IVF outcomes', says Dr Mahajan, whose research focuses on utilising mesenchymal cells to improve implantation rates and support embryonic development. Mesenchymal cells have immense regenerative potential, he states, adding that by harnessing their properties, experts can create a nurturing environment within the uterus for optimal embryo implantation and growth.
