Home pregnancy tests are those amazing little things that can give you the life-altering news. That being said, there is one particular detail about the pregnancy test kit that you would want to pay attention to, and that is the expiry date. If you did not already know, let us tell you that the pregnancy tests actually expire and here s all you need to know from gynaecologist Dr Arundhati Dhar.
When do home pregnancy tests expire?
The tests are good to use for 2-3 years and using it after the expiry date will not give you the accurate results. Take these 3 tests to confirm your pregnancy.
Why do pregnancy tests expire?
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. This hormone is produced when the fertilized egg gets attached to the wall of the uterus. The kit may have test strip or dipstick. The test strip needs to be held in the urine stream and the dipstick needs to be dipped into a sample of urine. If you are pregnant, an area on the end of the test strip or dipstick changes colour. That being said, a chemical in the test is sensitive and can become less sensitive over time. So you will not get accurate results if you use a kit that is past its expiry date.
So if you missed your periods and got negative results, it is possible that you used a kit that has past its expiry date. Take a fresh test and if the results are still negative, go to your doctor to know the cause of your missing periods. A false positive pregnancy test result may also be seen in some cases if you used a kit that is past its expiry date. Also, ensure that you Read the test after the suggested 3 5 minute reaction time. Here is a step-by-step guide to taking the home pregnancy test.
