Common signs and symptoms of pregnancy – frequent urination

Did you know frequent urination is also an early sign of pregnancy?

If you find yourself using the restroom too often it should serve as a warning sign for you, especially if you are planning a pregnancy or had unprotected sex with your partner in the recent past. The reason being frequent urination is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy and can strike as early as a week after conception. However, no matter how strong your urge to urinate is, you might just pass miniscule amounts of urine when you are inside the restroom. If this frustrates you to the core remember, this symptom will stay with you throughout your pregnancy and leave only post-delivery. Apart from this, even unusual vaginal discharge might also signify as a symptom of pregnancy.

Why does it happen?

During conception when the ovum and the sperm meet to make a fertilized egg which implants itself on the wall of the uterus, it starts to secrete the pregnancy hormone called hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. This hormone is responsible for the increased blood supply in the body and also in the pelvic area. Increased blood supply in the pelvic area makes the bladder irritable and overactive. This results in an urge to urinate frequently, albeit in small amounts. Another common sign of pregnancy is missing your monthly period.

As one progresses into the pregnancy and the uterus bulges out, it also exerts pressure on the bladder that heightens the urge. This makes frequent urination a common symptom of pregnancy. You may also find yourself waking up in the middle of the night too often than usual for the same reason.
